We use ordinal numbers for dates.

The first of March

The twenty-ninth of September

There is a difference between the British and American way of saying dates. This is important when we write dates using figures only.

In British English, we say the day first, then the month, then the year.

1.4.95 = the first of April, nineteen ninety-five

8.6.95 = the eighth of June, nineteen ninety-five

In American English, we say the month first, then the day, then the year.

1.4.95 = January fourth, nineteen ninety-five

8.6.95 = August sixth, nineteen ninety-five
