You are going to read an article about Abraham Lincoln. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A –G the one which fits each gap (1-6). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use.
Abraham Lincoln spent the early years of his life in a very simple log cabin in Indiana. Later his family moved to Illinois, where he lived for many years.
1___________. He did learn to read, however, and he read as many books as he could. As a young man, he worked at many jobs, but eventually he decided to become a layer. (It was not as difficult to become a lawyer then as it is nowadays). Later, he was elected to the state legislature and then the U.S. Congress. There Lincoln proposed a law in which the government would buy all the slaves in the District of Columbia (the area around the city of Washington) and set then free. This law was not approved, but it showed how Lincoln felt about slavery.
2___________. Lincoln and Douglas had a series of debates about slavery in the new states that were entering the United States. Lincoln did not win the election, but these speeches made him quite well-known.
3___________. It was very, very tough election, but Lincoln won. Between the time of the election in November and when Lincoln actually became the president in March 1861, several states left the country. The next month, southern soldiers attacked a U.S. government fort in South Carolina. This was the beginning of the War Between the States, also known as the Civil War.
4___________. President Lincoln wanted to keep the country whole. He also wanted to stop slavery in all the states.
5___________. Lincoln had succeeded in uniting the country once again. However, Lincoln did not live to see the results of all his work. Only five day later, an assassin killed the president as he and Mrs. Lincoln were attending a play at a Washington theatre. Vice-president Andrew Johnson of Tennessee became president on Lincoln’s death.
6___________. Many cities, towns, schools, bridges, and streets bear his name. Lincoln is on the penny and the five-dollar bill. In addition, his birthday is a national holiday.
