Exercise. Determine the meaning of the modal verbs «need» and «dare». Trans­late thesentences into Russian.

1. «Mrs. Pierce, you needn't order the new clothes for Eliza. Throw her out,» said Higgins. 2. I don't think we need give her any more of our attention. 3. I was doubtful of my reception, but I need have had no misgivings. He came for­ward to meet me, hand outstretched, a sunny smile lighting up his face. 4. «How dare you come here and attempt to black­mail me?» Higgins asked Doolittle. 5. «You needn't go to the Stag,» said the landlady. «We can put you up for the night here.» 6. Anyone who knows canine nature need hardly be told that by this time all the dogs in the place were fight­ing as if their hearths and homes depended on the fray. 7. Exercise. Insert «didn't need» or «needn't have» according to the sense. Re­member that both presuppose absence of necessity to do something, but «needn't have» Is used to show that you did it.

Exercise. Fill in the blanks using the modal verbs «need», «to have to», «should» or «dare». Use the negative form where indicated.

Exercise. Translate the following sentences into English using the modal verbs «need», «to have to», «should», «dare».

1. Нам не нужно было стоять в очереди за билетами перед сеансом: мы купили билеты заранее. 2. Не нужно мыть окна сейчас, давай сделаем это вместе завтра. 3. Не­далеко от нашего дома построили станцию метро, и теперь нам не приходится ездить на работу на автобусе. 4. Текст был настолько легким, что нам не нужно было пользовать­ся словарем. 5. Напрасно вы купили так много хлеба, у нас есть хлеб. 6. Не надо было напоминать ей об этом случае: она очень расстроилась, и вечер был испорчен. 7. Вам надо было спросить его о том, когда ему удобно прочесть нам лекцию. 8. Ему не пришлось ничего рассказывать о себе, все его хорошо знали. 9.
